Alex Eala pulled off another major upset on Saturday (PH time), defeating World No. 8 and sixth seed Elina Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Berlin Open at Steffi Graf Stadion.
The Filipina came out firing in the opening set, racing to a 3-0 lead before fending off a brief rally from Svitolina to take the opener, 6-3.
Eala carried her momentum into the second set, breaking Svitolina in the opening game and eventually building a commanding 5-2 advantage. The Ukrainian refused to go away quietly, winning back-to-back games and recovering a break to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Serving for the match, however, Eala held her nerve and closed out the victory to secure a place in the semifinals.
The win marks another impressive result for the 21-year-old Filipina, who continued her dream run in Berlin with a straight-sets victory over one of the tournament's top seeds.
Eala will next face Linda Noskova in the semifinals as she looks to continue her remarkable campaign at the WTA 500 event.
