Tournament co-host Mexico punched its ticket to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating South Korea 1-0 in their Group A clash on Friday (PH time) at the Guadalajara Stadium.
Luis Romo broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, taking full advantage of a mix-up between South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu and defender Lee Gi-hyuk.
Kim came out to claim the ball but he landed on Lee while doing so. He spilled the ball as a result, with Romo steering it into the open goal for a 1-0 Mexico lead.
South Korea had a wonderful opportunity to draw level late, but was denied by Mexico goalkeeper Raul Rangel. Cho's initial header was blocked by Rangel's foot.
The rebound fell again to Cho, who flicked the ball towards the Mexico goal. Rangel managed to stop his effort again with his right hand, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
With the victory, Mexico secured the top spot in Group A with six points through two matches. South Korea is in second with three points, while Czechia and South Africa have one point each heading into the final round of group matches.
