In Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the New York Knicks erased a 16-point deficit to defeat the San Antonio Spurs, 94-90, on the road and clinch the series 4-1, capturing their third championship in franchise history.
From winning back-to-back titles in 1970 and 1973 to enduring a 53-year championship drought, the Knicks have finally returned to the top of the basketball world. Leading the way was Jalen Brunson, who capped off a remarkable Finals run by earning the 2025-26 NBA Finals MVP award.
With the Spurs firing on all cylinders in the first half, Brunson kept New York within striking distance, scoring 18 points as the Knicks' primary offensive weapon. After halftime, he continued to carry the load, pouring in 14 points in the third quarter to keep the deficit manageable.
Brunson then took over in the decisive fourth quarter. Playing through apparent discomfort, he spearheaded New York's comeback with a series of clutch baskets, eventually tying the game at 83. With 3:40 remaining, he drew a foul on a three-point attempt and calmly knocked down all three free throws to give the Knicks the lead.
After Dylan Harper answered with a crucial mid-range jumper to tie the game at 88, Brunson responded once again, sinking a clutch floater with 1:05 left to put New York back in front for good. He scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone on 4-of-6 shooting, finishing with 29 points in the second half and cementing his role as the driving force behind the Knicks' championship triumph.
Brunson logged 41 minutes and finished with a game-high 45 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals while shooting 14-of-27 from the field, 4-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 13-of-15 from the free-throw line.
With the performance, Brunson became the first point guard since Stephen Curry in 2022 to score at least 40 points in an NBA Finals game. His 45-point masterpiece also tied Michael Jordan for the most points scored by a player in a road-clinching NBA Finals victory.
