Alex Eala will resume her campaign at the 2026 Madrid Open on Friday evening (PH time), with the Filipina tennis star set to face No. 19 seed Elise Mertens in the second round on Court 5 at Caja Magica.
This will be the second meeting between Eala and Mertens on the WTA Tour, with the Belgian star holding a 1-0 advantage in their previous head-to-head matchups. Mertens defeated Eala in the round of 32 of the 2023 Jasmin Open, securing a 7-5, 6-0 win.

This will be the pair’s first matchup on clay, though, with their past meeting happening on a hard court in Tunisia. Eala improved her record on clay this season to 2-2 after beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.
Mertens has yet to play in the tournament after receiving a bye in the opening round. She has a 9-3 record this year.
