Best friends Alex Eala and Zeynep Sonmez start doubles campaign in Madrid

Best friends Alex Eala and Zeynep Sonmez will join forces on Thursday as they begin their campaign in the women’s doubles event of the 2026 Madrid Open.
Eala and Sonmez, who won their respective singles matches in the first round, will take on Hao-ching Chan and Fanny Stollar in the round of 32 on Court 7 at Caja Magica.
This is the first time that Eala and Sonmez will partner each other in a WTA event this year. They squared off earlier this season in Abu Dhabi, with Eala recording a 6-4, 6-3 win over Sonmez in the Round of 32.
Eala sent Filipino fans into a frenzy on Wednesday evening when she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 128. Sonmez also booked her place in the second round after beating Carlota Martinez Cirez 7-5, 6-2.
