Alex Eala will open her campaign at the 2026 Madrid Open later tonight when she takes on Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round of the WTA 1000 event. This will be the Filipina star’s first match since suffering a first-round exit at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix last week.

Eala and Pavlyuchenkova have never faced each other before on the WTA Tour. Eala enters the contest as the higher-ranked player at No. 44. She’s in a poor run of form, though, losing her last two matches on clay against Jelena Ostapenko and Leylah Fernandez.

Pavlyuchenkova, who is ranked 116th in the world, has struggled mightily this season, losing all six of her matches on Tour. The Russian veteran is coming off a first-round exit at the Dubrovnik Open last month, losing to 463rd-ranked Tena Lukas.
Pavlyuchenkova secured a spot in the first round of the Madrid Open after beating Viktoriya Tomova and recording an upset win over Yuliia Starodubtseva in the qualifiers.
