Clay remained a difficult puzzle to solve for Alex Eala, who suffered a 1-6, 4-6 loss to Leylah Fernandez in the first round of the 2026 Porsche Grand Prix on Wednesday morning (PH time). The Filipina-Canadian cruised to victory in this contest, needing just one hour and 28 minutes to demolish the outmatched Eala on Centre Court at Porsche Arena in Stuttgart.
Fernandez got off to a solid start, winning the first five games before taking the opening set 6-1 in 36 minutes. She sustained the momentum in the second set, getting the early break in the third game to build a 2-1 lead. Eala dropped her serve again in the seventh game as Fernandez extended her lead to 5-2.
There’s no quit with Eala, though, as she won the next two games to cut the deficit to 4-5. Fernandez thwarted Eala’s comeback bid, though, closing out the match with a service hold in the 10th game after falling behind 0-30 to book her place in the Round of 16.
It was the second straight defeat on clay for Eala, who previously lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the Round of 16 at the Linz Open.
