In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs fell to the New York Knicks 105-95, trailing 0-1 in the series. While starting point guard De'Aaron Fox struggled, recently red-hot rookie Dylan Harper delivered an impressive performance. Despite the loss, Harper reached several personal playoff milestones.
With the Knicks jumping out to a 14-7 lead early in the first quarter, Harper came off the bench and caught fire immediately, scoring consistently in transition to spark a 20-3 Spurs run that flipped the game. Harper finished the first quarter a perfect 3-of-3 from the field for 10 points and 2 rebounds. With that first-quarter outburst, Harper became the youngest player in NBA history to score 10+ points in an NBA Finals game.
Harper played 27 minutes and 31 seconds off the bench, finishing with 16 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal on 6-of-10 shooting (3-of-3 from the line). According to statistics, his 16 points set a Spurs franchise record for most points by a rookie in an NBA Finals game, surpassing Manu Ginóbili (12 points in Game 5 of the 2003 Finals). Additionally, StatMuse noted that Harper became the first Western Conference rookie since Magic Johnson to record at least 250 points and 100 rebounds in a single postseason.
In contrast to Harper's strong play, starting point guard De'Aaron Fox struggled mightily, shooting just 3-of-13 from the field. Following the game, calls for Harper to replace Fox in the starting lineup grew louder. Basketball reporter Kevin O'Connor wrote: "Dylan Harper needs to take the Fox minutes moving forward in this series. Harper should be playing near 40."
