Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the NBA's Most Valuable Player for the 2025-26 season, capping off a remarkable campaign filled with historic milestones.
This marks Gilgeous-Alexander's second consecutive MVP award. He becomes the 14th player in NBA history to win back-to-back MVP honors, joining Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird (three straight), Moses Malone, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, LeBron James (twice), Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Nikola Jokić.
SGA is also just the fifth guard in NBA history to accomplish the feat, following Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Steve Nash, and Stephen Curry. Among all back-to-back MVP winners, only Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James have also won consecutive championships in the same seasons.
This regular season, Gilgeous-Alexander delivered elite efficiency, playing 68 games and averaging 31.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.6 assists, and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 55.3% from the field, 38.6% from three-point range, and 87.9% from the free-throw line.
With this historic efficiency, SGA became the first guard in NBA history to average 30+ points per game while shooting 55% from the field in a single season. He also joined Michael Jordan as the only players in league history to average at least 30 points, 5 assists, and 50% shooting over four consecutive seasons.
Additionally, he became just the third player to score 20+ points in every game of a single season, matching Wilt Chamberlain (1961-62, 1963-64) and Elgin Baylor (1961-62). During the regular season, he also broke Chamberlain's long-standing record for most consecutive 20-point games.
From leading the Thunder through a rebuild to becoming the face of a championship contender, and now defending his MVP crown, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially ascended to new heights in NBA history.
