Josh Ybañez committed to return for his fifth and final playing year with University of Santo Tomas in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 89 men’s volleyball tournament.
Ybañez said his decision to stay in España for one final title run is rooted in a simple goal—to give back to the school that developed him from a lanky, undersized spiker out of General Santos into one of the most decorated players in UAAP history.
“Honestly, I think it’s the love I have for my school. It’s my way of giving back to my community, so that’s what I considered,” said Ybañez just moments after receiving his third Most Valuable Player award on Saturday.
“I am very grateful that I ended up in UST, so why not use my final chance to fight for the school and play for UST,” he added.
The 23-year-old outside spiker said winning a championship for UST and ending its 16-year title drought remains his top goal as he enters his final year in the collegiate ranks.
Ybañez also hopes to grow into a more mature leader capable of guiding the Golden Spikers’ young core and helping the team sustain its push for a breakthrough run in Season 88.
“As I’ve said in previous interviews, the MVP is not my goal. I welcome it, but that’s not what I’m chasing. It’s just a bonus from God. I’m thankful for it, but you all know what my real goal is here in the UAAP,” the 5-foot-7 outside spiker said.
“Personally, my main goal is to perform at my best every game and, of course, to lead my teammates and be an inspiration to the younger players. I hope I can become a better athlete and a better leader next year so I can guide my teammates well. That’s really my only goal.”
