The stage is set for the first-ever showdown between Alex Eala and World No. 2 Elena Rybakina. The pair will lock horns at 10 pm on Sunday (PH time) in the third round of the 2026 Italian Open, with BNP Paribas Arena the venue for their much-anticipated clash in Rome.
Eala booked her place in the third round after defeating Chinese star Xinyu Wang 6-4, 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour and 26 minutes. It was an impressive performance from Eala, who battled back from a 0-3 deficit in the first set.
Eala will look to make it three wins in a row on clay with an upset victory against Rybakina and reach the fourth round of a WTA 1000 clay event for the first time in her career.
Rybakina, who is the reigning Australian Open champion, defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 in the second round to set up a match with Eala.
