A new chapter in mixed martial arts (MMA) will be written on Sunday as UFC 328 features a landmark championship bout between Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira, marking the first time two male athletes of Asian descent compete for a UFC world title.
The event, set to air live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, was initially linked to UFC 327 before being shifted to the co-main event slot of UFC 328.
Van, representing Myanmar, enters his first title defense with a professional record of 16-2, including 10 stoppage wins.
“The Fearless” captured the flyweight crown at UFC 323 in December last year after Alexandre Pantoja was forced to concede due to an arm injury sustained during a first-round takedown exchange.

Across the cage, Taira stands as one of the division’s most promising contenders.
The Japanese spitfire holds an 18-1 record, with his lone defeat coming against Brandon Royval.
Taira also earned a notable win over former divisional king Brandon Moreno at UFC 323, strengthening his case for a championship opportunity.
The matchup carries added historical weight, with both fighters born in the 2000s, signaling a generational shift within the division.
Their contrasting paths to the top converge in a contest that could redefine the global reach of the Las Vegas-based MMA promotion.
