Alex Eala will begin her 2026 Italian Open campaign later today when she squares off in the first round against Magdalena French on Pietrangeli Court at Foro Italico. Action will start at 5 p.m. (Philippine time), with Eala looking to secure her first-ever WTA 1000 win in Rome.
The Filipina tennis star made her debut in this competition last year, losing heavily in the first round to Marta Kostyuk. Eala managed to win just one game in that showdown, losing 0-6, 1-6 to the Ukrainian.
Eala will look for a much better showing in the first round against Frech, who is ranked No. 45 in the world. The Polish player has a 10-11 record this season, with her last defeat coming in the second round of the Madrid Open against Solana Sierra.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Eala and Frech on the WTA Tour. Eala, who rose to No. 42 in the latest WTA rankings, is 2-3 on clay this season. She is coming off a second-round loss to Elise Martens in the Madrid Open.
