Alex Eala moved up two spots in the latest WTA rankings, climbing to World No. 42 ahead of her campaign at the 2026 Italian Open. The Filipina tennis star’s improved standing came following the completion of the Madrid Open, where she lost in the second round to Elise Mertens.
Eala has had a difficult start to her clay campaign this season, posting a 2-3 record on the red dirt. She suffered early exits at Linz, Stuttgart, and Madrid before making the trip to Rome for another crack at a WTA 1000 event.
Eala has an excellent opportunity to gain some ranking points in this event as she has been handed a manageable draw in the first two rounds of the Italian Open. She will face world No. 45 Magdalena Frech in the first round on Wednesday, with the winner of that contest set to face Chinese star Xinyu Wang in the second round on Friday.
