Alex Eala failed in her bid to reach the third round of the Madrid Open for the first time in her career, losing to Elise Mertens 2-6, 1-6, in their Round of 64 clash on Friday at Caja Magica.
Mertens quickly put Eala under pressure, breaking the Filipina’s opening service game to take a 2-0 lead in the first set. Eala responded by winning two of the next three games to cut the deficit to 2-3.
Mertens then found another gear, winning nine of the next 10 games to secure the lopsided victory in just one hour and 16 minutes. It was a disappointing defeat for Eala, who fell to 2-3 on clay this season.
Her stint in Madrid isn’t over, though, as she is still competing in the women’s doubles event alongside Zeynep Sonmez. They will face Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova in the round of 16 on Sunday.
