If the Western Conference is about positioning, the East is purely about survival, and on the final day of the NBA regular season, it’s a full-blown traffic jam with no clear right of way.

Five teams with multiple paths, and we get to see them sort it all out in one day.

At the center of it all are the Atlanta Hawks, who hold the clearest lane to the No. 5 seed, but not necessarily the easiest one. Beat the Miami Heat, and the job is done. Slip up, and things get complicated fast, forcing Atlanta to rely on a Toronto Raptors loss and a win by the Orlando Magic just to sneak into that same spot.

Toronto, on the other hand, sits in a position that looks stable on paper but is anything but. The Raptors can climb as high as No. 5, but only with a win over the Brooklyn Nets and losses by both Atlanta and Orlando. Fail to handle their own business, and suddenly they’re dragged into uncertainty. However, a win guarantees them a place in the top six, and with it, an escape from the Play-In Tournament.

That escape hatch is exactly what the Magic are chasing. For Orlando, the equation is narrow but clear. Beat the Boston Celtics and hope Toronto loses. That combination secures the No. 6 seed, which comes with the guarantee of a playoff spot. Anything less, and the Magic are left juggling fallback scenarios, including the possibility of settling for seventh, depending on how the Philadelphia 76ers fare.

And then there are the Sixers, who embody the chaos of this race more than anyone. Philadelphia still has a path to No. 6, but it requires everything to break perfectly. They’ll need a win over the Milwaukee Bucks, as well as losses from both Toronto and Orlando. Miss even one piece, and the ceiling drops.

Further down, the stakes shift from seeding to survival. The Charlotte Hornets and the Heat are locked in a quieter but no less important battle for the No. 9 spot. The difference between hosting a Play-In game and playing for their lives on the road. Charlotte can secure that edge with a win over the New York Knicks or a Miami loss. But if the Hornets falter and the Heat take care of business, the positions flip instantly.

It’s a reminder that in the East, even the smallest slip carries weight.
