The long wait is almost over. A total of 32 players will converge on Saturday, February 28, at Market! Market! Activity Center for the 1v1 King of the Islands National Finals. The top 16 players from the North Regionals and the top 16 players from the Regional Finals South will battle it out to determine who will take home the P300,000 grand prize.
Here are the three players to watch in the North section of the bracket.
Nelo Santos (Brgy. Langkaan 1)
Santos reigned supreme in the 1v1 King of the Islands Regional Finals North tournament, capturing the championship in dominant fashion at the Mall of Asia Music Hall last month.
He opened his campaign in the knockout stage with a victory over Jayron Mendoza before beating Bryan Banico 8-7 in come-from-behind fashion in the round of 16.
Santos then cruised to victory in the quarterfinals, beating Apple Cendana by a score of 7-3. He continued his solid play in the semifinals, ousting JL Suria 7-4.
Santos saved the best for last in the championship match, recording a 14-8 win over Marc Mayo in the finals.
Marc Mayo (Brgy. Bahay Toro)
Mayo captivated fans with his terrific performances in the North Regionals. He defeated Charles Forca and Mark Manalang in his first two matches in the knockout rounds to secure his spot in the quarterfinals.
Mayo then outlasted John Lerry Farre in a low-scoring contest in the quarters, recording a gritty 5-2 win. He then stamped his class in the semifinals, beating Keith Daguil by a score of 8-5.
Mayo’s dream run ended in the finals, though, losing by six points to Santos in the championship match. He will look to go one better and become the National Champion this weekend.
Keith Daguil (Brgy. Caniogan)
Daguil attracted attention for his outstanding play in the Regional Finals North. He started off strongly in the tournament, beating John Haboc in the round of 32 before eliminating Marc Sabado by a score of 9-7 in the round of 16.
Daguil edged past Aron Dale Dimaun 6-4 in the quarters to set up a semifinal showdown with Mayo. His title bid ended in the Final Four, with Daguil absorbing a 5-8 defeat. He will look to bounce back in the National Finals and become the tournament’s first-ever champion.
